Welcome to to my visual media blog. :) Here you’ll find daily/weekly/monthly entries chronicling what anime, movies and other media I’m currently watching. This also includes music that I’m currently listening to as well. Part of what I’d like to do with this site is to cede thoughts, ideas and recommendations accordingly, as well as give detailed summaries or reviews of the above. Take heed, especially for the visual media, that these may contain significant spoilers, but I’ll try to give an overall non-spoilerish description to start. A lot of what I’m doing with each of my blogs is emphasizing my love for writing and providing you with an informative outlook. Discussion is always welcome, and in fact, I encourage it. I don’t mind criticism or feedback, as long as it’s constructive.
That’s the site’s premise in a nutshell, now I’ll attempt to break it down further, since this is my About page.
About Rosepetals
My screenname is Rosepetals (in other venues, Rosepetals1984/Rosepetals19, rosepoet….yeah, I don’t ever tire of the image of the rose, because that’s how I view myself in some cases). Hence, that will be the name you will come to know as I’m writing through this blog.
My real name…is very rare XD Actually, I know my real name to be of Native American heritage, but I have yet to discover the meaning behind it, and find more than 3 people who share the same name. As for Rosepetals, I’ve used that alias for several years now, and it’s a name which a few of my friends know me quite well. It’s also a poetic moniker I’ve submitted creative writing pieces under for quite a while. I’m an avid reader as well as writer, and always like to put a intelligent spin on any topic that comes my way. This includes, but not limited to, some of my passions.
My passions in a nutshell: medicine, reading and writing, volunteering/helping others, music, and being around my loving family, friends, and comrades. I’m a grad student who doesn’t have much time on her hands, but I do my best.
Note that this is only a media blog of various sorts. My personal blog I deleted for wanting to move to another webhost. When I can find a time, I’ll place that up to give my two cents on what’s going on in my neck of the woods.
About this blog (Making of…)
As of Saturday February 17, 2007, this blog was created to expand upon my interest in the media world, particularly focused on Music, Anime, Books, and Movies. I’ll probably blog on the very few TV shows I watch, but it will be in sparce succession. Music and Anime I expect to be rather large and have multi-sections to come.
Why? Well, music’s a huge passion of mine; I can’t emphasize it enough. I love listening to different types of music from many different languages, genres, and such. Granted, that includes everything from classical and jazz to Spanish rock, early to mid 90’s R&B to alternative and college rock, punk to shoegazer, and metal to J and K-music. (For those of you who don’t know the lingo: J and K music is Japanese and Korean.) In other words, I’m oddball, transient, and downright confusing. XD You won’t really see me blog much on country, rap/hip-hop, or the broad, yet often highly criticized “emo” genre, but I’ll try to give a fair representation. Granted I will listen to it if you put it on my plate, but it doesn’t always mean I’ll like it. :P
Truth be told, that makes it hard to know where to begin in that aspect. I can’t tell you what music/musicians suit me without begging the question of “what genre?” and there’s no one genre I prefer, truth be told. I suspect I can start within a texture/mood/genre and work my way out description wise, depending on what suits my tastes for the moment. I can also give reviews of music I’m currently listening to and choose to review on an album/single/playlist basis.
As for anime…I’m not an otaku, I’ll say that upfront. :) Yet, I definitely love it. (I wonder if I’m an otaku for actually knowing what otaku really entails.) Something that I’ve come to like about anime is the not only the cultural allurement and underpinnings of it, but something about the way it expresses itself as an art form. Subjectively, I also like the way it makes me smile and shake my head at the characters and their nuances at times. Some cliches I can’t get over (I don’t mind harem anime series, but it gets old very quickly to me; plot reversal anime series, however, drive me up the wall with a few exceptional cases), while others I don’t mind so much. For one, I don’t view anime as simply “cartoons for adults”, it’s a bit more complicated than that. To overlook series that have intelligent airs (i.e. the illustrious thriller “Monster”, the inspirational “Twin Spica/Futasu no Spica”, the imaginitive “Sprited Away” or the much commended, yet quite overhyped “Neon Genesis Evangelion”) with shows “intended” for kids such as Pokemon, Monster Rancher or Digimon doesn’t do justice to the genre.
I’ve watched anime for a good 9 years it seems. I’ve seen a lot: well over 150 series, more if you count partial anime series, OVAs and movies. Some titles I own, some I’ve watched through special screenings and club gatherings, some through friends, some televised, and others…well…it comes down to the unlicensed fansub market. In fact, even the website I’m a part of regularly: Animenfo, I’m inching closer to my 100th review. I don’t do one shot reviews: I’ll watch something at least twice (my rule is usually sweet number 3) before attempting any analysis. Hint: you will note that my opinion sometimes shifts in light of a second shot, so that’s why I have that rule. Same with music, I can’t listen to something just once to get a good feel for it. I may dislike a song at first, then grow to like/love it, or vice versa. Indeed, I’ve definitely found myself doing the latter at times.
Books are self explanatory, I love reading, but usually I can review that within a oneshot perspective. TV shows, considering they do not reshow in some measures, will also have to be considered along those lines.
Other than that, that’s somewhat of what you’ll come to expect in this blog as it expands. I’m definitely looking forward to being a part of the blogsphere associated with these forms of media, and I hope you’ll welcome me with open arms.
If you need to get in contact with me at any point in time, I would appreciate it if you send all emails to Rosepetalsw at gmail dot com (spelled out so I’m not bombarded with spammers ^_^).
All the best,
Rosepetals
